I was not able to all the time because my mom did not allow us to bake. She thought we would burn ourselves. In college, stress is a factor so for me I found baking. Baking relaxes me the process of doing the batter then seeing the batter sponge up with a delicious smell. It is a small break from everything that is happening. Many children and adults spend less time preparing food and more time eating processed food or fast food (Ng, Popkin, and Smith, 2013). If families and individuals learned how to prepare food, then they are more likely to use the skill. My mother taught me how to prepare my lunches before the week started. This has helped me eat healthy and save money by not eating fast food during college. Creating nutrition and cooking classes would also align with Health People 2020’s goals because they are targeting teaching the community healthy behaviors and habits, along with improving the behaviors in all groups of the…

That was until I found a recipe on how to make some chocolate chip cookies and said, “I can totally do this!” an hour and a half later, (yes ... I struggled) and with some guidance of my mother, a batch of cookies popped out of the oven. I was scared at first to let anybody try them because they looked quite horrid, but as soon as the first daredevil, my older brother, tried this twelve-year-old’s cookies he immediately smiled, shoved the remaining cookie into his mouth, and grabbed another two.…

Throughout my life, my friends and family call me “Chef Steve”. They call me this because I always end up cooking and revising my mom’s food. In my strong opinion, I know the extra ingredients to make the food taste more appetizing. With the right seasoning and amount that I put in the crawfish is as easy as learning how to breathe. My most wished for food of all time is garlic crawfish, not only because of the taste, but for the process of how its made.…

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that an individual child with a desire to gain one Snickers bar, must be prepared to trade no less than three Twix bars. In my household, every bag of fun sized confections was an opportunity for a ridiculous negotiation with a not so ridiculous lesson behind it. When my father loves Snickers just as much as I do, why should he take only one inferior Twix for one Snickers? Critically assessing how much my companion stands to lose versus how much I was willing to pay to get what I want is a skill I have been developing since middle school. Negotiation and debate, human interaction of all kinds have always piqued my interests both academically and recreationally.…
