“47% of college students report having at least one nightmare every two weeks.” (Picchioni et al., 2002. p. 157). How stress and anxiety disorders affect dreams is something that is often researched. Many studies have come to the conclusion that dreams allow you to release stress. When you dream, you are allowing your mind to cleanse itself of your fears and ideas of the day. However, when your fears are constant like in the case of an anxiety disorder, going through your dreams anxious can cause more anxiety in their day to day life.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder is defined by the National Institutes of Health as “People with generalized anxiety disorder display excessive anxiety or worry for months and face several anxiety-related symptoms.”
