Society and the media influences have convinced teenagers that they would be more successful and beautiful if they change their appearance and reputation by using stereotypes such as the Barbie doll and models. With these forms of influences teenagers’ self-esteem will be lowered and their behavior can alter which can lead to violence. There are several different ways that teenagers will modify their appearance or reputation, but amongst these the more common are by using steroids, plastic surgery, eating disorders, hair products, makeup and alcohol and drug abuse. Steroids can enhance many athletic abilities such as muscle and stamina which is the reason for several famous athletes being apprehended for the use. Athletes are influenced to use this drug which will influence teenagers to do the same. There are innumerable amounts of effects of the use of steroids. Some consequences of the use for males are growth in the breasts, infertility, and baldness. Some consequences of the use for females are hair loss, withering of breasts and fetal damage amongst pregnancies (Adams, 2006). Some extreme and serious effects for both genders are severe acne, liver cancer and tumors, aching joints, kidney damage, heart attack or stroke and major mood swings (Adams, 2006). Cosmetic surgery is a major factor in influencing teenagers to change their appearance. A popular question that is asked frequently is why would teenagers consider cosmetic surgery and the number one answer is teenagers dislike their appearance and believe to be successful cosmetic surgery is the answer. Teenagers will compare their appearance to celebrities and believe that they should look similar and believe that plastic surgery can contribute to their dislikes. Every celebrity that walks the red carpet does not come and reveal their natural hair, they have trained professionals who are paid to style their hair. Some desired hair products, mostly used by both men and women are hair gel, hair cream, hair mousse, hair serum and hair spray. The gel is used to solidify an area of hair to create a specified style. Some negative effects of the use of hair gel is hair loss, dandruff, discoloration and damage to the hair and dehydrating of the hair (Goenka, 2013). Hair cream is similar to hair gel because it also hardens and styles the hair, but in cream form rather than gel (Cioffi, 2010). Using an overload amount of this particular hair product can damage hair, which will lead to dead ends (Cioffi, 2010). Mousse is a foam styling product used on curly hair to eliminate frizz and to display the natural curls. Hair mousse contains alcohol, which can dehydrate the scalp and includes a chemical known as propane that is acknowledged as a human toxic (Bloch, 2012). Hair serum is a product used to create shine and is also utilized as a detangler. Hair serum can cause greasiness and stringy hair from the amount of silicones contained in the product.
