Schaquana Evita Spears, a mother of six from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was jailed for spanking three of her kids with a belt. She argued that spanking was a disciplinary measure she uses to prevent her kids from being ending up in prison like their father. The local authority felt her punishment to the kids was life-threatening, hence the kids were put under the custody of their grandmother. Conscious that spanking was a common disciplinary practice with majority of Americans parents, Spear and many others were confused. Psychologies have come up with a different way of discipline, since studies have proven that spanking children damages their overall well-being. This research is to assist parents to look for an alternative way of disciplining their kids. The researcher concludes that spanking is a poor disciplinary method to change behavior. They outlined examples to prove why parents require more efforts. The brain of younger kids which controls reasoning and logic is still developing and therefore, their understanding is minimal. Again, spanking may slow down attachment process, hence, the parents have to support kids navigate their way through negative emotions. The best way is through comfort and nurture.
