A twenty eight year old man, known as Jacob, has autism very severely. To better Jacob’s autism, an experiment was done on Facebook to see if social networking could help with his symptoms and build relationships. The goal of the experiment was for Jacob to use Facebook as a way to make friends. With those friends Jacob made, his next step was to develop the friendship and improve his overall symptoms of autism. Using Facebook gives Jacob the chance to bond with other since he lives in such a rural area and suffers from autism. As this experiment was tested before, it has shown the help build relationships with other individuals (Schultz, Jacobs, and Schultz 39). At the start of the experiment, Jacob had five friends of Facebook, all of which were his family members. Throughout the experiment, he would receive friend requests from more family members. This showed what friending others on Facebook could do. Two month into the experiment, Jacob started to connect with others beyond his original purpose (Schultz, Jacobs, and Schultz 40). Jacob reached out to former classmates more than what he had while in high school overall. (Schultz, Jacobs, and Schultz 41). There were small signs that Jacob’s symptoms of autism were decreasing. Interacting with others helped Jacob in many ways. He improved the quality of his relationships with others and increased his interaction with others. The Facebook experiment gave Jacob confidence to make relationships with the stress that the autism brought on. Social networking gave Jacob opportunities to better his symptoms. Because Jacob uses Facebook, he began to venture off into real world, face-to-face interactions while doing it comfortably.
