With the recent jump in the world of social media, campaigns are making more progress than ever before, however, is the publicity actually being used to exhibit a positive message, or is it simply being used to create one time fads? Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist, once said, “What is interesting is the power and the impact of social media... So we must try to use social media in a good way.” Campaigns, like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, have attempted “to use social media in a good way”, but sometimes, their efforts are deficient in spreading awareness of their intended mission, but efficient in spreading excitement about the fad. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was started in the summer of 2014 by an activist group attempting to raise money for the research of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig 's disease). Campaigns are using this to their advantage and making people feel that if they don’t spread the word then they are the odd ones out and are missing out on an entire subject of existence. With this advantage, organizations are making huge lead way in the fundraising industry. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Tumblr are the most prominent social media sites used in the US and with almost the whole population of this nation having at least one of these accounts; word of anything spreads quickly. Knowing this, the people of the ALS Association made people feel as though they had to participate in this challenge in order to fit into the ever changing society of America. The ALS Association also used “star power” to their advantage by featuring the videos of celebrities doing the Ice Bucket Challenge, causing everyday citizens to feel the need to follow in their idols’ footsteps. While these common persuasion techniques may seem simple and discreet, the ALS Association effectively implemented them into everyday
