Technology is one of the most influence discovery in the world. It makes people to do anything easier, especially in communication. You can contact your relatives and friends anywhere and everywhere. With your gadget, you can send pictures and video, text messages, and even make a video phone call no matter how far you are. This is becoming a habit among society to use their gadget to make a communication through social media. However, there are positive and negative sides from this invention. All this time, I know people starts to use social media because everybody does that. I would like to know deeper what the effect of social media is for most people. Does it make us closer to our relatives and friends? Or does it turn out to be a bad habit?

Marc Brackett, the director of Yale University’s Center for Emotional Intelligence said that quality of the real communication is getting weaker (Brackett). They spend a lot of time to stare on their phone screen and don’t care about other people around them. This makes children and adults struggle to understand emotion because the lack of face to face interaction. Brackett said that there is no balance between direct and indirect communication (Brackett). For little kids, they need more attention from their parents such as being hug or touched, talking face to face, and playing together. He also said that children and parents are speaking in different types of language. English slang goes wider and makes old people don’t understand what their grandchild says. Society makes shorter language and make it cooler in social media. For example, we write things like “LOL” (laugh out loud) or “I c” (I see) to express and make shortcut so we don’t have to write long sentences. However, that laughter expression is not real substitute for hearing people laugh. Real laugh and talking directly have a real power to lift our spirits when we are feeling low or sad. Alex Lickerman, the author of article “The Effect of Technology on Relationships” made an observation that people are often uncomfortable with face to face communication. (Lickerman). They have to keep up an eye contact, make a good body language, speak clearly and bravely, which are not really easy for shy people. It makes sense if people tend to choose communicate with social media than meet in person, especially teenagers who want to ask somebody
