Smoking tobacco is often a habit that is very difficult to stop. In the past it has been the leading cause of many well known diseases and cancers. Smoking was first documented back in the 15th century, when the New World introduced it to Europe. (English and Spencer). Since …show more content…
As previously stated some of the affects of smoking for the mother include, premature labor, premature rupture of the membranes, and plenty more. What is worse is that mothers still take chances to smoke, but tends to forget the causes of smoking while pregnant. Some of the causes being the increased rate of stillbirths, miscarriages, and ectopic (outside the uterus) pregnancy (Torpy 1286). As the mother smokes a cigarette, the chemicals from the cigarette go into the mother’s bloodstream and can eventually find its way to the unborn child’s bloodstream, further more causing damage to the fetus as if it would if it were the adult. If this does not worry a mother than this should, some of the harmful chemicals that are in cigarette smoke include: nicotine, carbon monoxide (CO), tar, benzene, and heavy medals, such as lead. Since nicotine is well known for being very addictive, researchers have tested the amniotic fluid and the fetal plasma, an have showed higher nicotine concentrations than the smoking mother in the fetus (Shea and Meir 268). An addiction that so many cannot break or learn to quit even while pregnant. In many cases women have had many successful pregnancies while smoking, with no complications and healthy beautiful children. Like previously stated quitting is not easy and does not come easy to everyone, so doctors have offered counseling and support groups to pregnant women. It is true that it is not the end of the world for the mother and the child if the mother continues to smoke, but with results like SIDS, preterm labor, miscarriages, and other issues, why take that chance. There are medicines that have been talked about to help pregnant woman quit smoking, varenicline and bupropion, but have not been proven to be effective or safe during the pregnancy. With that a number of woman, 40%, feel there is not other way out, so they hide their addiction and do not discuss this serious issue with their doctor. Woman/mothers should not hide information like this, if a mother intends to smoke than do so, but inform the doctor, so that the doctor can evaluate the fetus and the mother
