In 1999, pregnant women 15–44 years of age, 3.4% reported using illicit drugs. (Lester, par 17) The amount of illegal drugs that is readily available to every American, undeniably increased over the past 25 years. In most major cities anyone can easily find someone who is selling, which increases not only the minor population getting its hands on it, but also pregnant women. Not only on the streets is it easy to find harmful substances but at a restaurant you are required to sell alcohol to anyone over the age of 21 who isn 't visibly drunk before serving them, even if they’re visibly pregnant. As a cashier at a mini mart, you are required as an employee to sell cigarettes to anyone over the age of 18. As an employee, you cannot discriminate

While reading through some of them, I came to the realization that in some cases the mother will smoke and drink, yet the baby will come out only weighing half of a pound less than the baby born in the next room over a few minutes before from a healthy mother. There are so many variables in the world that it is hard to get a perfect answer, which makes it easy to believe that possibly smoking and drinking during pregnancy could not end up being the reason for premature infants. My personal view is that if your body is being harmed by what you are ingesting, the fetus inside you is also going to be harmed. Almost all women know exactly what is in their addiction; how using their addiction is affecting their body in a bad way, yet they continue to do it because their doctor advised them to slowly wean themselves off it. When my mother got pregnant with my little brother, the doctor told her to keep smoking. Said that each day she needed to smoke one less time during the day, till eventually she was hardly smoking. Then he had her move to “light” cigarettes. Throughout this process, five months had already passed. She was now four months away from giving birth to my baby brother, smoking two light cigarettes a day. I honestly feel if she wouldn’t have been able to buy the cigarettes
