The Value Of Tardies According To Smithville High School

Improved Essays
According to Smithville High School’s 2015-2016 handbook, if you have a certain number of tardies you lose your driving privileges for a duration of time. I strongly disagree with the policy that Smithville High School has put into effect that states that if you have a number of tardies during your semester, you will lose your driving privileges. This policy should be dropped for many reasons. I believe this will harm students more than it will help them because if they can’t drive to school themselves, there is a greater chance of them coming to school late, they also have other responsibilities outside of school, I don’t believe that five tardies is fair for a whole school year and when the weather gets bad, students shouldn’t have to risk …show more content…
Without a car at school, students would have to ride the bus home, having them arrive at their house at three o’clock or even later and some students work at three o’clock. This would cause them to be late to work and possibly even lose their job. Now student are forced to be irresponsible for being late to school and now work. The school should try and enforce responsibility and encourage kids to go to work on time and make money. If students also play sports or are involved in extracurricular activities within the school, without their car they wouldn’t be able to participate because they would have to ride the bus home if they didn’t have a ride home. With softball, if i missed practices before a game i would have to sit the bench for that game. That not only hurts the students but the school too if they need that player. With the policy students’ outside responsibilities and extracurricular activities will be affected …show more content…
If they can’t drive to school themselves, there is a greater chance of them coming to school late. Also students have other responsibilities outside of school that can be affected greatly if they don’t have a car to drive back and forth. The policy also states that after five tardies that is when you lose your driving privileges, and I feel this isn’t enough for a whole school year. The last reasoning is depending on the weather some students live on back roads and don’t have cars that easy get around in the snow if school doesn’t get called off. Students should just get a detention instead, depending on their reasoning. At least then, they are more flexible with detentions. Some students serve their detentions before school because they have other things to do outside of school after school and don’t have the time after. This will help students be more prompt to school and be able to prioritize their other responsibilities to be on time to

In my home state of Mississippi, we have not had many laws passed, which are named in honor of crime victims. One of the most recent laws of this nature would be what is known as “Nathan’s Law”, named in honor of Nathan Key, who had been struck and killed by a vehicle, as he exited a school bus at his house. This incident occurred in Jones County, Mississippi on December 11, 2009, and Nathan was five years old at the time of his death. The origins of “Nathan’s Law”, as stated, began on December 11, 2009, as five year old Nathan Key exited a school bus, after school, and attempted to cross the road to get to the his house (Gebben v. State of Mississippi, 2012). Nathan had exited the stopped school bus, after his 11 year old brother,…

As young adults we are impulsive and do not think in the long term without guidelines a lot of kids can be seriously injured and even at an increased risk of death. Another positive that would come out of these new protocols is by putting these policies in place we are keeping student safe in the long term but also backing the meaning of a student-athlete up. With these protocols the risk of concussion will go down and hopefully keep the student- athletes at their normal cognitive level (How concussions affect academics,…

Over the past ten years there have been several issues pertaining to why school should start later in the day. Many parents, teachers, and board leaders have tried pushing the issues so that the start time will change, but not a whole lot has happened. There are schools in all fifty states that want to jump on board and start school later, so why not just do it? It’s way easier said than done. The top reason why people don’t want to start school later in the day is because they are already used to the seven or eight AM start time…

Some like it, many hate it, but one thing has remained a constant at UAFS since it opened its doors in 1928, which is its status as a “dry” campus. A dry campus simply means that the possession and/or consumption of alcohol is prohibited on campus grounds, regardless of age. Some argue that having a dry campus that many students are being put at risk because of the University policies that urge students to leave campus when it comes to drinking. It has been said that Universities that choose to remain dry are risking the lives of the leaders of tomorrow for better statistics today. While this may seem excessive and a bit of an overreaction at first, there are statistics on this subject suggest otherwise.…

    Essay On Driving Age

Most teenage drivers are involved in car crashes every year, and more are killed than in any other age group. Even to this day, 6,000 teens die in accidents annually—more than fifteen a day (Triplett 1). These alarming statistics prove that receiving a driver’s license at the age of sixteen is merely too young. Teenagers are incompetent about being on the road, which increases the chances of putting others at risk because they have not developed a strong level of maturity and experience. The driving age among teens should be increased because facts prove that teenagers cannot handle the physiological and physical challenges that approach them on the road.…

Although many people believe that a person should have their high school diploma before he or she gets their driver's license, but I disagree because you can be sixteen to get your driver’s license and some people are eighteen before they get there high school diploma. I don’t think that you should have a high school diploma before you get your driver’s because when kids turn sixteen they want to start doing things for themselves, and they don’t want their parents driving them around when the 20 because they didn’t get their high school diploma. When you turn sixteen you want to go to your friends parties, and it would be embarrassing if you show up with your parents coming to drop you off and leaving, then when the party was over it might be one in the morning on a Sunday morning then you would have to wait for your parents to show and drive you back home.…

The minimum driving age should not be raised from 16 to 18. In my opinion, teens already have a problem getting where they need to go considering their transportation is usually their parents. By the time they come home from work they are too exhausted to drive anywhere else. Starting out early than waiting until one becomes a legal adult to drive gives a teenager an opportunity to exercise responsibility and to have some independence. Just because teens are prone to do reckless, irresponsible things does not necessarily mean they will get into accidents because they are younger.…
