Staying awake throughout an entire night is so common that everyone has done it atleast once in their life. Whether it be a college student cramming in a late assignment, a parent nurturing their sick child, an employee to get in extra hours, or just for fun, lack of sleep has rendered itself something prevelant and common in all lives. It is a common belief that a couple of sleepless nights here and there cannot do much harm. Unfortunately, this misconception is very common yet not true at all. It is understandable that students have tons of homework to do and due dates to manage. It is also understandable that some people may have to work strenious hours in order to sustain their household. It is understandble that life happens which causes sleep not to always be the priority however an adequate amount of sleep is crucial to the well being of not only human beings but every animal on earth. The amount of sleep required to function differs from person to person however most healthy adults need between 7.5-9 hours of sleep to function at their best while teens,children, and infants need even more! Growth hormones are released all throughout the day. However, the most intense release of growth hormones take place shortly after a child is in deep sleep which is why a sufficient amount of sleep is crucial for a child. Growth hormones are not the only hormones that are affected by lack of sleep. The hormones used to regulate appetite and hunger are also greatly affected by the lack of sleep and can lead to overeating or not eating at all. Hormonal imbalances can also lead to negative affects in the way the body metabolzies foods. It is important for the body to metabolize its food correctly and if the way the body metabolizes foods is damaged this can trigger insulin resistance and Insulin resistance is linked to being the cause of type 2
