Effects of Sleep Deprivation
One of the most basic functions of the human body or any animal is to sleep. Without getting enough sleep, one can die after approximately two weeks. Along the way, however, if the sleep of children or adults is consistently disturbed they can experience a multitude of negative effects that can harm themselves and others. Today, adults and students are losing more sleep than ever before and can fail to understand the negative consequences of sleep deprivation. In the United States alone, approximately 40% of adults are receiving less than the suggested seven to eight hours of sleep (Jones). Interrupting the natural sleep cycle and experiencing sleep deprivation can effect one physically, mentally, and emotionally.
The most typical effect one can feel after not getting a good night’s sleep is being physically tired. Practically everyone has experienced this effect and it often can only be fixed by sleeping better the upcoming night, taking naps, or the use of a stimulant such as caffeine. The fatigue that follows the loss of sleep can inhibit sufferers of sleep deprivation from being able to complete laborious tasks at a satisfactory rate. The tasks that they are required to do can also be much more difficult to start or finish than if they were fully rested. As one consistently loses sleep, his or her posture can become worse as he or she fails to maintain control over the muscles to keep oneself upright. Other effects that come along with poor…
