Down syndrome children have different characteristics, so you need to have different approaches to match with these characteristic. The following are some characteristics of children with down syndrome: (a) short attention span; (b) take longer time to learn; (c) impulsive behavior; (d) demonstrates poor social skills; (e) always forgot previously learned skills; (f) unable to express what their wants and needs; (g) inability to grasp certain things; and (h) unable to make decisions. These characteristics should be addressed in order for them to give opportunities to become more independent in order for him/her to cope with everyday’s situation. It refers to the harmonious relationships between the person and the environment, in other words, it is the relationships that comes among the people, the environment and the personality. He viewed two important points of views of adjustment: (1) adjustment as a process and (2) adjustment as an achievement. Adjustment as a process refers to the adjustment of the child is largely depends on his interaction with his/her environment in which he lives. When the child is born, the world for him is a big buzzing, blooming confusion. He cannot differentiate among the various objects of his/her environment but as he grows and matures he comes to learn to articulate the details of his environment through the process of sensation, perception and conception. Adjustment as a process and as an achievement is interconnected. Adjustment as an achievement means how effectively an individual could perform his duties in different circumstances. If people interpret adjustment as achievement, then we will have to set the criteria to judge the quality of adjustment. Adjustment mechanisms are almost used by all people. It is used to protect and enhance the self-esteem of the individual. The danger is always within the person; he fears his own motives.
