Throughout this book you will get a first hand look at the way slavery was and how it affected many people throughout the South. In Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, the author informs the reader of the gruesome and horrific treatment that African Americans had to endure, by showing the poor treatment done to them by their masters, the lack of freedom they were given, and awful living conditions they had to live in.
Tubman demonstrated the horrific and gruesome treatment of the slaves by, giving you a first hand experience of the life of a slave, and how they were not treated like typical human being. An example Stowe uses, Executors sale Negros, agreeably to order of court, will be sold on Tuesday, February 20th, at the courthouse doors (pg.70). The text materializes that Blacks were being sold to those of white people or also known as their masters and treated as if they had zero rights. Slaves were obligated to do whatever their master had demanded them to do, if they would talk back or refuse to do their demanded task they would be punished. This shows that blacks were not treated as citizens, they weren’t given the rights, unlike the slaves the whites were mostly the masters and had more freedom. Slaves were treated as if they were dogs living in the slums, they were also looked down upon as if they were objects. Stowe shows other examples of different masters, like Mr.Shelby who was the slave owner of Tom and Harry and sold them to Mr.Haley. Different slaves owners all were different toward their slaves and how they treated them. For example, Mr.Shelby was discussing with his wife Mrs.Shelby about them selling Tom to slave owner Mr.Haley. They discuss over the terrible things that would happen if they sold Tom, and that they promised Tom his freedom and instead he gets sold (pg 20). An example Stowe uses, George worked in menial labor which means he could only see his wife very so often (pg 10). Stowe displays how George, working in a factory and Eliza his wife, working as servant for Mr. Shelby could hardly ever see each other making it a struggle on their marriage. Slaves dealt with a lot of harsh weather especially in the south where in the summers its very hot. The climate affected their work performance, their health, and the way they lived. This made it very difficult for slaves to endure these harsh conditions, and affected the way their masters treated them. Many slaves all had different jobs such as, a servant which usually worked inside the master’s house and helped prepare food or clean, others worked in factories or on plantations, or in the field. All of them had different jobs based on their master, which as mentioned in the text all masters were different towards their slaves. Their life wasn’t easy no matter what the circumstances were.
The life of a slave was not easy it gave them many challenges they had to face and with those challenges came with many obstacles. Stowe presents throughout the book the struggle of slaves life and all the hard life challenges they had to endure. Uncle Tom’s Cabin
