An adolescent girl with high self-esteem is more likely to be a “goody- good,” smart, and social while an adolescent girl with low self-esteem is more likely to get in trouble, try less in school, and be shy. Society uses social media, other individuals, and an individual’s family to downgrade an individual’s self-esteem. Social media become a more prevalent aspect in an individual’s life during his or her adolescent years. During the adolescent years, girls will start to gossip, bully, and downgrade other girls to make themselves feel better. While all the stress of society occurs, an individual’s family becomes an important aspect. If an individual’s family is not positive towards him or her, then he or she is more likely going to have a lower self-esteem. A positive relationship and encouragement with an individual’s family is a crucial factor to the development of high self-esteem. Why do we allow society to do this to us? If individuals stop trying to become the “perfect” image that is shown on social media, then they would start to have a higher self-esteem. If individuals started to have a higher self-esteem, then there would be less bullying and downgrading. The image of the “perfect” person would change from having to be skinny but not too skinny, tall but not too tall, beautiful, smart, outgoing, and overall perfect to normal. Normal would become happy, fit, smart in his or her own way, and beautiful in his or her own way. Normal would mean to be individualistic, unique.
