School Shooting In America

“It shocks us. It always shocks us. Particularly when it happens in the state where we live, the county where we live, the city where we live. . . . We tell one another how horrible it is. Because that’s true, but we’re not surprised. One of the worst things about news like this is that horrible is the new normal [emphasis added].” (McLeigh) School shootings have become the new norm in America. This should not be the case when these tragedies are completely avoidable. According to a recent study published by Everytown, there has been at least one hundred and fifty school shootings since 2013. That results in an average of nearly one school shooting per week. (The Long, Shameful List of School Shootings in America) Parents should not have to deal with the fear of losing their child hanging over their head before they send their child to school everyday. For one parent to have to face the grief of losing their child, even once a year, to this senseless tragedy is one time too many. This is a completely avoidable crisis that has not been dealt with properly.
School shootings are not a new tragedy to the American people. The first major shooting that made national news was the Columbine School Shooting in 1999. This was the first time our nation rallied together to support the friends and families of those lost or injured in the shootings. To this …show more content…
Stricter gun control should not take guns away from law abiding citizens and keep unauthorized guns with missing or no serial numbers in criminals’ hands. Parents should never have to be afraid to send their children to school. The American dream is not losing on of your 2.5 kids too soon because of a senseless act of violence.
