Legalizing Prostitution Essay

Prostitution has been linked to increasing the risk of contracting STD’s most notably HIV. Sexually transmitted disease has been spreading out of control in the U.S. Irresponsible and unprotected sexual encounter only adds to the dilemma of eliminating this infections. Trafficked sex workers not only deal with this serious health risks, but also damage one’s mental, physical and emotional being. The physical abuse is extremely disturbing it is difficult to imagine that happening to a person. Getting kicked, punched, raped, penetrated with foreign objects, burned with cigarettes, stabbed are only a few examples of the physical trauma they experience on a daily basis. In addition to physical abuse, trafficked women and children are subject to mental and emotional exploitation. PTSD, depression, depersonalization are some of the effects of prostitution to an individual. Legalizing prostitution will not control or resolve the stigma nor will it benefit any individual forced to do this type of labor. Legalizing or regulating prostitution is a temporary solution and should be eliminated completely by imposing severe punishments to traffickers and have a concrete and stable plan to rehabilitate the individuals affected. One can argue the benefits of decriminalizing prostitution. For example, legalizing prostitution introduces sex workers to mandatory medical check-ups, allows them to obtain licenses, regulations and taxing the individual are all beneficial not only for the sex worker but for the government. On the other hand, legalizing prostitution will not eradicate the abuse but will only make the abuse legal.
