Being raised in a situation where my parents had me when they were both seventeen, and both being able to follow through with their career goals is incredible, but also very rare. Teenage mothers are more likely to drop out of school. Only about one-third of teen mothers obtain a high school diploma (Worrell). Many young adults are not prepared for this life changing event, so how do you avoid it? Teen pregnancy is an important issue for several reasons. For example, the babies born are more likely to suffer health, social, and emotional problems than to children born to older mothers. The young women having these children are at an increased risk for medical complications, such as premature birth and maternal mortality. The naive and cheap ways you are taught going through high school includes getting preached at from teachers about being abstinent. Obviously, that is not helping, because the pregnancy rates are still going up in teens. The two most heard of pregnancy prevention tactics are: condoms and birth control pills. These options work great some of the time, but they both come with their draw backs. With using condoms, it helps protect against sexually transmitted diseases but they do break about twenty percent of the time. Surprisingly birth control pills and condoms are the least effective in preventing pregnancy, condoms are only 79 percent effective and the pills are 91 percent, again only this high when you take the pill the same time every day (Wayne).
Women have many choices when it comes to avoiding a pregnancy, but as for men they are limited to condoms and abstinence. Men play the main role in pregnancy prevention because without them there would be no fertilization. Another solution to this problem would be to offer a male birth control that would reduce the number of sperm cells. This may not seem like much in the long run but it adds up in the long run of preventing unwanted teen pregnancies.
When teens unwantedly become pregnant they are scared, many of them can’t afford to raise a child. Especially when paying for daycare, daily necessities of raising a child, and college. Not being able to raise and afford having a child is the main cause of abortions.
