Effects on Mothers This disease can cause many issues amongst the mothers whose child has NAS. Often times people just look at the effects that NAS has on the baby but the drug-abusing mother is also effected. Women have been using prescription and some nonprescription drugs while pregnant and letting themselves get an addiction for them. In (14) . . . says, “There has been a 33 percent increase in nonmedical use of prescription opioid pain relievers among pregnant women in the last decade.” The rise has been prevalent because of mothers not getting the proper education before pregnancy on what drug-abuse in babies can lead to. Not only can the baby have health problems, but the mother can as well. Some of the hazards that they might face can include things with the environment (malnourishment, violence, inadequate obstetric care) (13). When a mother is using drugs while pregnant they don’t generally think about doctor’s visits and other types of prenatal care that is needed for a healthy pregnancy (1). The risks for not getting proper prenatal care can be devastating and life threatening to the mother and the child. Also, women that don’t seek prenatal care, and some that do, might be looking for addiction help. That is a good thing and a bad thing. Some of these women turn from what they were using to methadone (2). Methadone has been proven to help women with drug abuse with pregnancy but it is doctor regulated and assumed that she is getting the proper prenatal care…
