Today popular culture has a substantial effect on our lives. It can affect what we wear, what music we listen to, or even how we behave. Many people decide what clothes to buy depending on what is in style or what celebrities are wearing. The same happens when people choose what movies to see or what music to download. While pop culture may seem harmless, it exposes people of all ages to sex, drugs, and violence. Children and teenagers all over the world are watching shows or listening to different types of music that reflect improper behavior. Many take what they see on television and in movies and apply it to their everyday life. This is conveyed when children believe violent behavior or unacceptable language is allowed. The entertainment industry exhibits drugs, sex, and violence in music, movies, and television shows. These types of entertainment should be limited or censored in both America and other countries. Barack Obama has explicitly asserted, “I’m concerned about sex, but I’m also concerned about some violent, slasher, horror films that come out; you see a trailer, and I’m thinking, ‘I don’t want my 6-year-old or 9-year-old seeing that trailer while she’s watching “American Idol”’ ” (Source C). Numerous parents can relate with Barack Obama’s comment because they want their children to be exposed to upbeat and happy television shows and movies as opposed to media containing vulgar language and violence. Children who are exposed to unsuitable media may harm their values of honesty and good manners. In Iran many teenagers at the very least know the names of pop music icons like Madonna or Michael Jackson (Source G). Kids and teenagers are familiar with popular music stars and they should not be influenced to take on bad habits by what these idols produce. While not all singers have bad impacts on their younger audience, several do and it is not
