Plastic Overtaking the Oceans

In a study conducted by UC Santa Barbara’s National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), they found that “8 million metric tons of plastic” are added to the oceans pollution each year. Recently, plastic pollution has been become a predominant problem in the environmental society; however plastic production and pollution has been on the rise since the nineties. Plastic is overwhelming the world, because it is not biodegradable, meaning it can never be decomposed; therefore plastic will not simply disappear, either animals will digest it, humans will clean it up, or plastic will continue to accumulate in the ocean’s garbage patches. Since plastic is all over the world and the amount is continuing

The article also uses statistics to show the overwhelming amount of plastic polluting in our oceans; however his statistics show the proportion of pollution that is plastic. Derraik continues to say how the large amounts of plastic is a threat the marine life. Derraik argues that marine animals are becoming entangled in the plastic and are ingesting the plastic. Derraik claims Scrubbers, the microscopic pieces of plastic pollution in the ocean, have not been researched of enough to determine their effect; however the figures from the studies that have been conducted they could cause worse effects than regular plastic pollution already does. Concluding, Derraik urges the world to fight back against plastic pollution in marine …show more content…
Credible sources who back up the argument that plastic must be cleaned up from the ocean and that there is a need to research and study the plastic that our marine environment is being overtaken by have been brought up and summarized in the previous paragraphs. A counter argument was also brought up; however because that article disregards the fact that the giant garbage patches sitting in the middle of the oceans is currently causing health issues and will continue to cause even more once the plastic is broken down and transferred all the way up the food chain to humans, the counterclaim is not a valid reason to forsake the clean up of ocean pollution. Once the pollutant and its effects have been researched enough to safely know the best way to clean out our oceans, the cycle of destruction caused by the increasing the plastic pollution will be stopped. This will help solve many global health issues that our world is facing today and may save many species from becoming

Have you ever been swimming in an ocean, and you notice a plastic bag or bottle floating in the water? There are many ways people can pollute the oceans. For starters, oil tankers spill oil into the water (Doc 2.). Boats sink (Doc 2), and eventually the boats break up into pieces and spread across the ocean floor (OI). Next, people dump sewage and garbage from boats and on beaches (Doc 2).…

The Surfrider Foundation creatively exemplifies what human pollution and carelessness is resulting in such as creating compelling ads like “Fossil, Bag”. Trash islands, which is a result from human pollution, clutters the oceans as well as contaminates marine biology with plastic and plastic components. Unfortunately, humans will continue to contribute to the trash islands and the marine life epidemic by throwing their plastic products out the window and onto the ground as they live their irresponsible lives. The vicious cycle of human carelessness is resulting into the consumption of their very own trash: plastic bags and plastic products. The more that plastic is produced and dumped into the ocean, the more prevalent plastic really is within human daily life, as well as inside…

On September 19, 2016, according to Upfront magazine Brad Lander states that “fees discouraged people from using plastic bags which harm the environment.” This tells us that the evidence supports the claim because the Upfront magazine says that it claims harming the environment and its wildlife including fish, birds, and more. This has been happening a long period of time also, has still been happening right now, but our food web is being affected by it because the fish feed on other fish who feed on other fish and some people eat fish. On September 21, 2016, according to Newsela it states that “Microplastic is harmful to zooplankton.” Microplastic is harmful to zooplankton because zooplankton eats small food also, it can be confused…

Marcus Eriksen and his colleagues explain in a 2014 article Plastic Pollution in the World 's Oceans, that there is an estimate of 5.25 trillion plastic particles weighing about 269,000 tons are floating in the world 's oceans. Also, according to Renee Cho in the 2011 article Our Oceans: A Plastic Soup, Cho states that an average amount of time for a plastic water bottle to decompose is around 450 years . Those fishes and other marine animals will be around the plastic waste for years before it decays or when someone removes it from the ocean. Surfrider and Rise above Plastic states that they strive for the best so that each and every sea creature can have a safe environment to live in and the way for that to be accomplished are to have decreased the amount of plastic in the…

The author Charles J. Moore, is an internationally recognized expert on marine plastic pollution, mentioned that it’s so hard to recycle plastic especially that plastic melt at low temperatures. Consequently the impurities dose not vaporized; however, even if the impurities does vaporized it won’t make any difference it would still causing pollution (Moore). Charles J. Moore went 10 times to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (“one of five major garbage patches drifting in the oceans north and south of the Equator at the latitude of our great terrestrial”) with a team of scientist. However, in his last trip to Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 2014 Moore said that he was shocked of the increment of the quantity of plastic waste since his last trip in 2009 (Moore). The book Oceans a Visual Guide notes that plastic become very important in the modern world and everyday use, but the necessity of using it would lead marine animals for extinct (Hutchinson and Hawkins 210).…

Often this includes killing plant life and posing dangers to local animals.” This shows that plastic ain’t only hurting the oceans this is hurting the land and other types of animals that live in land. For plastic to get into the ocean it doesn’t only have to be from leaving trash on the beach. Even if you throw away your trash at the beach but you still litter on the streets, plastic could get into the ocean from heavy rain, flash floods, because the water could pick up the trash and when it goes down the water drains all that trash goes into the ocean. People don’t understand how much damage just one little piece of plastic would do to the ocean and the marine…

We take the beaches and ocean for granted, using it as a dump site when we are too lazy to do the right thing by the environment. People do not think before they do, resulting in many horrendous outcomes on the space around them. A large area of water between California and Hawaii was cleaned of all rubbish, showing shocking weight results of six times more plastic than plankton [Santa Barbara News, 2007]. Considering that plastic does not decompose, it would be left in the water, posing a threat on the innocent and unknowing sea creature around it.…

The way we neglect our ocean with heavy amounts of pollution can potentially affect our lives in a negative manner. Driving cars and the use of plastic is essential to our daily lives, but we use them without the concern for how they are affecting the habitats on Earth. Some people think that the chance that they are doing harm to the ocean is less important to them than cost or inconvenience of fixing a pollution problem. Through sources from researchers and scientists, they have found evidence of pollution caused by the two essential commodities in our lives, plastic and burning fossil fuels. Environmentalists have found solutions to reduce the plastic waste in our ocean as well as attempting to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere…

Introduction Throughout the world, millions of tons of plastic are produced annually and used in countless ways, from packaging to exfoliants in cosmetics (REF). Plastic’s wide popularity stems from its desirable properties, such as being aesthetically pleasing and cost effective. Much of the plastic on the market consists of disposable, one-time-use items. Discarded plastic then accumulates in the environment; so far many studies have shown that plastic accumulates in marine ecosystems (Capenter et al., 1972, Thompson et al., 2004, Browne et al., 2011, Derraik, 2006) and freshwater systems (Eriksen et al., 2013, Free et al., 2014, Corcoran, 2008). Typically, classification of plastic debris occurs in two ways 1) primary or debris in manufactured form (i.e. microbeads used as exfoliants in cosmetic products, bottle caps, and cigarette filters) or 2) secondary, plastic derived from primary debris, (i.e. degradation products produced by photodegradation and abrasion)…
