When working with children it is important to portray an appropriate behavior. It is critical to build a relationship with the children so that they can feel comfortable around you. Many children look up to adults as role models and act and talk the way the role models do. If you were to swear, or portray aggressive acts the child is more than likely going to portray those acts as well. When working with the children at Nicollet it has shown how true this is for the toddlers. Many of the toddlers are in the process acquisition, becoming toilet trained and improving their personal hygiene. It is always important to dress appropriate and professional when at your job. It is critical that you understand your professional roles and boundaries in the job you are working in, and to demonstrate a professional demeanor in behavior, appearance, and communication. For my field experience, it is important that I have the appropriate appearance when dealing with younger children and families. To have a professional behavior and communication around the children as they look up to you as a role model and can catch on to things very quickly. It is difficult to realize that when with the younger children you need to use smaller words and words that are appropriate for their ages.
