Pesticides Environmental Effects

Pesticides, a substance used for destroying organisms that are harmful to cultivated plants, are extremely damaging to the environment, and can be detrimental to human health. Pesticides are typically used on farms, and over 1 billion tons of pesticides are used each year. Pesticides can lead to air pollution, after pesticides are sprayed on plants, winds can pick up the chemicals, leading the chemicals to remain in the air, which can potentially harm wildlife. A solution suggested that opposes the harmful chemicals is the use electromagnetic waves to repel small rodents. These electromagnetic devices claim to affect the nervous system of small rodents, which allows them to stay away from said area. A new solution is to combine ultrasonic waves with electromagnetic waves to repel pests, the ultrasonic waves will produce a frequency that cannot be heard by humans, but bugs will hear as a warning. The electromagnetic waves will be used to affect the nervous system of the bugs, but since their nervous system isn 't in affected the same way as small rodents, which is what the electromagnetic waves are usually used for, the ultrasonic waves will be combined to create a …show more content…
Hall invented Ultrasonic Pest control, “A device for generating and radiating ultrasonic sound waves for the control of pests such as rodents [and] insects” (Lester B. Hall, 1984). The sound generator consists of a plurality of transducers placed in two groups working in two frequency ranges in a manner providing a complex output in the form of a unsystematic pattern of frequencies and volume peaking in the ultrasonic frequency range (Lester B. Hall, 1984). In short, Ultrasonic pest control works by using high frequency sound waves that chase away unwanted pests (Barb Ogg, 2010). The waves emitted by the ultrasonic pest control device are a “high frequency waves which are not audible to human ears. But, they can be heard by rodents and insects.” (Mayuri Kulkarni,

Roly Pollie Party; How Different Types of Music Impact Pill Bugs Behavior In our experiment, my partner and I came up with the hypothesis that the vibrations of different kinds of music would affect the behavior of pill bugs. Pill bugs, also know as Roly Pollies, are small, black, terrestrial crustaceans, that roll up to protect themselves from predators. Pill bugs can't hear, but they can sense the vibrations from the sounds. This lead my partner and I to see how the vibrations from the sound would impact the behavior of the Roly Pollies.…

In this particular episode of the podcast, 99% Invisible, Roman Mars explores unpleasant design, and how architecture and technology have contributed greatly to the depersonalization and sterilization of public spaces. One of the original methods of deterrence through design is sound, more aptly put, sound that is unpleasant or assaulting to the ears. The best example of this is something I myself heard about but never experienced (thankfully) throughout my adolescence. In an attempt to combat teenage loitering, numerous businesses and storefronts throughout the U.K have placed a sound box outside, known as 'The Mosquito'. This device emits a shrill and ear-piercing noise, only audible by teenagers and young adults.…

Over this ran aluminum roaches and iron crickets, and in the hot still air butterflies of delicate red tissue wavered among the sharp aroma of animal spoors! There was the sound like a great matted yellow hive of bees within a dark bellows, the lazy bumble of a purring lion. And there was the patter of okapi feet and the murmur of a fresh jungle rain, like other hoofs falling upon the summer-starched grass. Now the walls dissolved into distances of parched weed, mile on mile, and warm endless sky. The animals drew away into thorn brakes and water holes.…
