Is Online Learning Helping Or Hurting Education?

Is online learning helping or hurting education, that is the question? A lot of education professionals think that online education is hurting the education program, but a lot of other people as in teachers, government officials, and parents, actually think it helps more than hurts the student’s education. I think the main reason there is such a big debate over online learning is because this is a fairly new way of learning. the in the classroom setting, going to school, day to day routine is what everyone is used too, and some people are afraid of change, even if online learning is the more logical thing to consider when thinking about education for yourself and/or child. I think in order to progress and develop the world and our culture, …show more content…
With online learning the parent or an in home tutor is not teaching the student, a teacher through the computer is teaching the student through email or virtual classroom, but the parent does not have to be present. A lot of people say this is another way for students to get lazy and become unfocused and fall behind in their education process. But I completely disagree, I find this as an opportunity for the student to get completely ahead if they are focused, and determined, you could graduate early and then have time to figure out what you actually want to do. I think you just have to know your student and know if they would thrive in an education environment at home. Also you need to trust your child if your student is saying they want to try online school from home, you should let them try it and if they don 't like it, they can just go back to normal school, its really not that big a deal. Online learning can help if your focused and want to do good, and it can hurt if you get distracted easily and like to …show more content…
Online learning is easier for everyone involved less gas is spent on taking kids to school, less money is spent buying school supplies and other school necessities. Now I am not saying online learning is for everyone, but it can be if we put our minds too it, who knows maybe one day we won 't even have public school, and everything will be online. I can see the parents concern as to their child falling behind or not getting the same kind of education because it is through a computer, but it is still a real person that is teaching the content, not some robot. Have you ever tried online education, what side of history are you

‘’Incomplete Students’’ ‘’Most kids don’t put schools first on their list unless they perceive something is at stake. They’d rather be sailing’’. These words of Mary Sherry describes how young students do not take much importance to the bad grades they could obtain based on the work done in the school semester. They care more in sailing into their world that is socializing on the internet, being on the cell phone most of the time as well with the television. Parents of students and teachers should be aware of the education that young students are learning and advise the young students to study and read more rather than play video games or being in the cell phone.…

Distractions such as social networks, procrastination and the ability to do things without teacher supervision could interrupt with ones learning. An online learning student could possibly become distracted due to someone not motivating them to do the work. For example, in a classroom a teacher is there to help students and make sure the students are focused and on track. "The laid back atmosphere of the home schools allows distractions to go unchecked for a while, because the feeling was often that there was always time to get caught up" (Anthony). It is likely that those who take online courses can fall behind if they are not motivated enough to stay on track.…

Along with increasing our academic freedom, it also reduces the risk of a teacher favoring a student, or even worse having biased views against students. With online classes you are never actually face to face with instructors, so they cannot decide on a personal level whether like you or not. Even though it is unprofessional for a teacher to act in such a way, there is no way to get around certain bias believes that an individual may have. One final reason that I believe online courses are better for some people, is that certain individuals cannot work in extended periods of time on tasks. Many people have very short attention spans, and forcing them to divulge in uninteresting material for hours at a time can actually be harmful to their learning experience.…

Some devices are useful, like computers, but schools should not be constantly worried about getting the latest technology for their students. Cheating is easier when there is more access to websites, but if too much is blocked then doing work can become a hindrance. Technology is used everyday by students and usually in a recreational manner. Switching from recreational use to educational can be difficult. Teachers cannot be trained fast enough in current technology and when they finally are many students find it outdated and boring.…

Many teachers fear that growing up in the age of technology is “producing a generation of teenagers who prefer to work alone” (Scheuerell). And although there are studies to prove that to be true as sited in Scheuerell’s article he also clearly states that many students “prefer to collaborate electronically via the Internet.” This is why “internet security is an important topic for educators” (DeFranco) to bring into the curriculum. Students “lack emotional maturity” (DeFranco) which could cause a problem if the teacher did not educate themselves with the technology to monitor the students. Bringing in the internet is not meant create hindrances in the classroom learning environment, but to establish a new way of learning and…

This, however, is not the case. Technology can help students because it will encourage them to get more interested in the subject, so instead of being distracting it can be an advantage in learning. For parents and institutes, it will be a good investment for the future. Students can use the computer or tablet in the future and also the educational institute can use the technology for future students. Parents that get the technology from the school only have to pay a small deposit to the school, which is more cost-effective than buying their own computer for their child.…

When the class becomes challenging, it allows the student to go more in depth in whatever research, reading, or critical thinking they need to do in order to get the highest grades. It is almost like a video game approach, the majority of children would not play a videogame that never progresses and always stays as easy as level one, however, once a student shows they are capable, more challenges can be given to them. In order to help keep the students in school who may not be able to handle the challenge, it is important to have “relationships with teachers and counselors who believe and support them [because it is] a determining factor in remaining in school” (60). This is also part of the “payoff” that students receive when succeeding. The students receive support by the counselors and teachers that they may not be receiving at home.…
