Defining the Issue
The World Health Organization states that “Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century” ("Childhood Overweight and Obesity"). The purpose of this research paper is to explore the issue and effects of child obesity in the United States of America. Obesity is caused by “an imbalance in calorie intake and calories utilized” (Jimerson 1). Weight gain occurs when the amount of calories ingested is more than the amount burned. Child obesity is becoming more and more prevalent in today’s society, in the United States over 1/3 of children are overweight/obese ("Child Obesity"). Poor nutrition, an increase in portion sizes and minimal physical activity are the main causes of this issue. The consumption of foods that are very high in sugar and fat has been increasing steadily since the early 1980s. A healthy diet should include a variety of foods from all five food groups (Childhood Obesity Foundation). There has been an increase in the amount of over processed and fatty foods in restaurants and stores. Healthy foods are typically more expensive while, on the other hand unhealthy foods typically come in bulk for a cheaper cost (St. Rosemary Educational Institution). Since the 1980s, portion sizes have been increasing, especially in the fast food industry.
