In a recent study conducted by the newspaper LA Youth, 18% of American teenagers admitted to having to pay for their own music supplies, including lessons, due to the fact that the schooling systems cutting the budget. In the same poll students ranked music education as the seventh most important thing that should be cut out from the school, only beating out sports, guidance counselors ,administrators and teachers (in that order) (Zhao qtd by Huffington Post). The Huffington Post asked their users the same question “Which of the following should be cut first?” and only 2.2% of voters stated that the fine arts should be removed from the education system in order to save money (Huffington Post). Research examining the effects of music education has shown that music facilitates the learning of other subjects and enhances the skills used in other subjects. In fact research has proven that “The schools that produced the highest academic achievement in the United States today are spending 20% to 30% of the day on the arts, with special emphasis on music” (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement 1).
