Money has largely affected the most played and supported sport in the world, known as football. Over the years, along with the progression of football the money has flooded in with a direct correlation. It has been argued in two directions, one of which suggests that it has been for the best, but on the flipside it is claimed that it is ruining and deteriorating the quality of the game. There are many reasons that people believe this, as a result a strong argument can be formed against the massive significance of the involvement of money.

It is said that the youth are not able to grow to reach their full potential due to the money going to the star’s head increasing the extrinsic value of playing the sport while debatably reducing the intrinsic value. This can be seen with the footballer Patrick Roberts, docked ‘the English Messi’ as he was lured away from previous club Fulham Fc to sign for current club Manchester City for a big money deal. This involved the club paying up to £11 million for an unproven young talent. This can be seen all across the sport but specifically in the English Premier League with Manchester United paying up to £58 million for the raw talent who is Anthony Martial. Not only can this money go to the stars head, but it puts massive pressure on him to perform to warrant such a price tag. This could take away from the pleasure of the game which was ultimately the reason why the game was played in the past. This may cause the player to suffer a slump in form due to the players head being in the wrong place and taking part in the sport for the wrong reasons. Pat Nevin has said “They play for the money, and there is too much cheating now,”, this supports the point that was just made. He also suggests that anybody who claims they play football out of love is lying with the main value to them of playing football is the mass amounts of money that is involved.
