Happiness can be described as charming and positive feelings, such as satisfaction or euphoria. Webster’s dictionary defines the word happy as: feeling pleasure and enjoyment because of your life, situation, etc. Although that is the worldwide definition, everyone has their own definition of what happiness is. Huffington Post did a survey and found out that only one in three Americans is genuinely happy. In a world full of hatred and unfortunate tragedies, everyone is struggling to find their own version of happiness. So it is difficult to characterize happiness since it is exceptionally challenging to accomplish it? The science behind happiness explains that we can actually train ourselves to achieve happiness. So what gets people to that point? Everyone has a different opinion of when they have reached that. For example a parent might say they are happy when all of their children are grown up with families of their own. On the contrary, a single hard-working businessman or woman might say he or she has reached happiness when they are at the highest position in his company. Achieving happiness depends on the goals set, interests, and the wants and needs of life. Someone who is homeless and someone who has seven homes could be equally happy because they have different wants and needs. People can be happy without material things, but not all rich people are happy …show more content…
Although it is not impossible to be happy while having a mental illness, it is still very challenging. Medications can be given to people with mental illnesses, which usually help decrease feelings of that illness, but in many cases, also prevent other feelings. For example, the medication, Zoloft is an anti-depressant, but tends to make the person unable to feel positive feelings as well. Instead of medications, things like therapy or talking to someone are recommended. This allows for feelings of sadness to decrease and feelings of happiness to increase. Sammi’s definition of happiness is yet to be found. Dealing with depression for a good part of her life has made it hard for her to see if there even is a form of happiness for her.
