The C8 found in the water was known to cause “observable deformations in animal’s organs”. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) even came out with a study saying that C8 was toxic, and that it lasts forever. Instead of taking action to remove the C8 from the water, DuPont decided to hide this evidence.…
Prior to the 1980’s and environmental laws and concerns, it was a standard unwritten procedure to dump waste on the ground, rivers, streams and oceans. Unsuitable boxes, containers and storage units for keeping waste were inadequate and often toxic substances were left out unsecured. These practices were happening destructively everywhere in the environment and thousands of contaminated sites were created. Contaminated sites often included warehouses, landfills, processing plants and manufacturing sites. The superfund program in 1980 was imposed by congress to clean up these contaminated sites based upon health concerns of the people, environmental risks and possible ecosystem destruction.…
Over the years Brownsville, Texas has been in the process of industrializing and coming up with ideas to do so. Recently, Brownsville has proposed to build a Liquefied natural gas, “(LNG) is natural gas (predominantly methane, CH4) that has been converted to liquid form for ease of storage or transport” (Project). This process also requires very strict safety measures and precautions during all liquefaction stages, due to the flammable nature of the gas involved. If a leak happens in the process of the gas being transported, then anybody around the area the gas can cause an asphyxiation hazard to anyone exposed. Texas LNG will construct, own and operate an LNG facility to be constructed at the Port of Brownsville in Brownsville, Texas.…
Environmental Pollution and the Love Canal Throughout the country, there are many bodies of water. Each one of these bodies of water has a possible chance of becoming a polluted land. The United States did not really care about the environment, or how harshly others were affected by the environment before. Since people did not care about the environment, it was easy for bodies of water to become polluted.…
Among the other environmental issue, the most pressing health issue in Maryland that I selected as being the top priority and most essential is “Saving the Chesapeake Bay”. The Chesapeake Bay is an estuary, a body of water that is formed where freshwater from streams and rivers flows into the ocean, mixing with sea water. The nation’s water is in jeopardy to 10,000 miles of Maryland streams affected by the polluting industries that carved loopholes in the Clean Water Act.1 "Save the Bay" campaign is the Chesapeake Bay Foundation – the largest conservation organization in Maryland that their mission focus on reducing pollution, restoring and protecting the wetlands and forests. Some of the major issues saving the Bay are not only of saving the 200-mile-long inlet that runs from Havre de Grace, Maryland to Norfolk, Virginia, also the 50 major rivers and streams that pour into the bay each day, and the creeks that feed those rivers and streams.1 A…
Bridging the nation and identifying with nationals whose lives the common gas industry has perpetually changed, Fox revealed wells that release fracking chemicals into groups' water supplies; normal gas handle that retch intense methane into the environment; and men, ladies and kids whose wellbeing has decayed subsequent to their terraces got to be "gaslands." The narrative's essayist and chief, Josh Fox, had been drawn nearer by a characteristic gas organization that was occupied with renting his family's Milanville, Pa., home for boring. Fox set out crosswise over America looking for data about normal gas boring routines and their effects on the earth and soundness of the individuals and territories in the penetrating areas.…
Volcanoes exist all around the world. They are the weakest spot on the Earth’s crust where hot lava comes to the surface. Volcanic eruption results from magma. The summit of magma sometimes they rise to the vent instead of the crater. Volcanos can also be by plate boundary.…
On september 11th one of america's greatest tragedies took place in New york. This horrible event caused chaos and fear in thousands of lives and the entire nation felt this monumental impact. This took a toll on Americans every day life because they had to now question every move they made. Before this event Americans thought they were invincible but they now realize that we are not safe as we thought we were once were. 911 changed America's views on their security and we never truly were the same after this event.…
Imagine going for a nice walk with your dog and seeing a huge white cloud sweep over you, knocking you and your puppy out. This is similar to what happened at Lake Nyos 30 years ago. The Lake Nyos explosion included many details common to explosions and caused damage and destruction to property and lives that affected the region, but the area has recovered in its aftermath. Many parts of this disaster are common to explosions. The Lake Nyos disaster was an explosion of carbon dioxide that was being gathered at the bottom of the lake.…
Glenda Hoffman BIO-1000-02-15-FA The Environmental Impact of September 11 Ecotoxicology is the study of impacts of pollutants on the structure and function of ecosystems, including their effect on the environment. The aftereffects of 9/11 is one of the most perfect examples of ecotoxicology. This had become, within moments, one of the most dangerous atmospheric conditions ever to occur on American soil. The first written evaluation of the environmental consequences of the attacks were completed five months after the attack to learn what happened to the environment.…
There were no reported direct casualties stemming from the disaster. However, there were numerous miscarriages and birth defects directly caused by the hazardous waste. Countless children were injured from burns procured from playing near chemical exposure (Beck, 1979). The Environmental Health Perspectives conducted a study to determine the mortality rates of previous Love Canal residents compared to New York mortality rates as a whole between 1979 and 1996. Their study showed no elevated mortality rates from specific cancers were reported for the Love Canal area (Gensburg et al., 2009).…
On Monday, January 2, 2006 an explosion occurred at about 6:30 am in a coal mine in Sago, West Virginia. (Madsen, 2009). The Sago Coal Mine explosion resulted in 12 fatalities, but 14 other workers were able to successfully evacuate (West Virginia Office of Miners ' Health, Safety, and Training, 2006). Accident investigations were promptly launched by the owner of the Sago Mine known as International Coal Group, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the state of West Virginia (Madsen, 2009). The main purpose of the investigations was to determine causation in order to prevent similar tragedies.…
The gas was released either by thrown canisters or shot out towards the enemy, but it was most commonly used in canisters. After the war the gas became rather ineffective towards well equipped and trained troops. However it took an estimated 1.3 million deaths from mustard gas for generals to adapt strategy and scientists to adapt equipment effective against it. One of the immediate effects of this gas was the cylindrical gas mask to be invented in1915, by James B. Garner. This mask, along with effective training, would render mustard gas obsolete later on, but not until after 1.3 million people had suffered from its excruciating pain.…
Dofasco Acid STSE 1. Summarize this article in your own words. Include all the main points. (4) On September 7, a burst pipe at ArcelorMittal Dofasco sprayed hydrochloric acid mist through the Crown Point neighbourhood, which runs south of the plant.…
Even more troubling, than the potential groundwater contamination, is the claim that the methane released during this process is minimal. Although the overall amounts are relatively low, methane has 105 times more warming impact pound for pound than carbon dioxide and so, just a little can go a very long way when it comes to climate change. Not surprisingly, there is wide disagreement on how much methane is being leaked into the atmosphere as part of the fracking process. In a study at Cornell University, Robert Howarth found that the leak rate of methane was between 4 and 5.6 percent (Stockton). Although industry backers have fielded competing studies that they say completely discredits Howarth's findings a recent report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has supported his numbers as reasonable.…
