Our world is moving faster now more than ever with technology; people are experiencing concepts that would have never been imagined possible 20 years ago. With today’s technology opening the world of social media, which has been made easily accessible through cellphones and computers, recent generations are being raised during an extraordinary time. The technology driven 21st century evokes the question, are children and teens being raised in an era when the media is doing more harm than good? Teens are nearly documenting their entire lives with frequent updates and photos to a plethora of social media platforms. Although teens sharing their lives with their “followers” may seem harmless, people are calling this “the psychological drugs of the 21st century.” With the benefit of social media revolutionizing the way people communicate and socialize, come negative impacts.
Media is today’s biggest distraction. According to Nielsen 's Total Audience Report, Americans aged 18 and older spend more than 11 hours a day watching TV, or using smartphones and other electronic devices. Bearing in mind that people are only awake for about 16-17 hours a day, 11 hours is a great deal of time to be spending on electronic media. Whether we are working or studying, we are constantly checking our phones and social media because we think “a few seconds” won’t hurt us, but those seconds always turn into minutes and next thing you know you will be 100 weeks into some random person’s Instagram…
