Adolescences is a time where boys and girls start figuring out who they are and how they want others to perceive them. Adolescences identify themselves is through self-image, creating an identity for themselves and for others to like. Self-image is a crucial development stage for adolescences because they want to be accepted by their peers, have the latest fashion trend, and have good self-esteem. There are many different types of influences on self-image that pressure teens to strive for society’s ideal beauty. During adolescences, teens are criticized when their self-image doesn’t measure up to America’s ideal beauty standards, which can cause negative consequences on an individual.
Media has a huge impact on adolescent’s self-image and can cause harmful behaviors for adolescents. “…media effects are likely significant during early adolescence due to social and emotional processes such as personal identity development, increasing peer pressure…” (Eyal & Te’eni-Harari, 2013). Teens tend to compare themselves to what they see in the media and think that’s what they have to look like. Studies show that when adolescent girls compare themselves to characters in the media, they start thinking of ways to improve or enhance themselves in the future.
