Seattle children’s Organization found that language skills may be delayed from all types of media viewing. Research has shown that young children hear more words from TV and have less interaction with real people, which can lead to speech delay. They also found that excessive media usage can reduce a child’s IQ and reading performance (Seattlechildrensorg, 2015).
Most cartoons and media don’t support Islamic values. Many may seem innocent but they actually promote violence, disobedience, and other un-Islamic values. If children empathize with the characters that are doing these things then they may see these bad things as being good and think it should be copied. These all can alter children’s views about violence. They may see it as acceptable and it may delay development of moral reasoning. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ says, “Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us” (Surah Tawba, 9:51). We also have from our beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم,“ ….Know that if the nations gathered together to benefit you, they will not benefit you unless Allah has decreed it for you. And if the nations gathered together to harm you, they will not harm you unless Allah has decreed it for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2516).
There is a need for more Islamic media. We need media where the characters have Islamic moral values, etiquettes, and dress that are acceptable. We need more media that have true stories, like the stories of the prophets and other stories in the Qur’an. We have many printed materials, but we need to lead by example and encourage children to read, understand, and learn.
Even though the Islamic World is in need of more halal media that depict true Islamic values and rules, it still shouldn’t replace parents, family, and educators. The Prophet said “Each child is born in a state of “Fitrah”, but his parents make him a Jew or a Christian (Muslim). This shows the important role we play in our children’s lives.
