The cardiovascular and nervous systems are interwoven when it comes to the effects of massage in relation to homeostasis. For the cardiovascular system, the increase of blood flow comes by way of light effleurage and petrissage strokes at the beginning of the massage (which manipulates local tissue, increases the transportation of blood, oxygen and nutrients to the tissues, eliminates the waste products from them, thereby encouraging an effective and effectual system. As the massage warms the body up, the strength of the effleurage strokes increases and the therapist will ensure that the direction of the strokes is towards the heart. This can help to directly increase systemic blood flow and lead to slight increases in the heart and respiratory
