One known item that is ubiquitous in many different areas is trash. Whether one decides to walk down the streets or grab a quick bite to eat, it is often likely that someone will stumble upon an unsightly piece of garbage. This grotesque item often is found in once beautiful areas and it is slowly piling up. While some individuals will have no concern for this situation, that callous attitude has caused devastation for the ocean and its inhabitants. With information from Stephen D. A. Smith and Robert J. Edgar in “Documenting the Density of Subtidal Marine Debris across Multiple Marine and Coastal Habitats,” they found and conducted studies noting troubling observations. During the research, many of the once beautiful oceans are now dumping ground unfortunately accepted by individuals. As it will continue to grow, marine litter is only causing massive deaths to the sea life and may impact the fishing industry. A point by Shauna Pettipas in “A Canadian policy framework to mitigate plastic marine pollution,” the global plastic waste became a “national problem” leading to plastic contaminating floating around the oceans (Pettipas).
