Over the past decade, life expectancy has been on the rise. Not only does it help in determining key components of polices and programs, but it also demonstrates the advancements in healthcare, technology, and awareness. With obesity on the rise, it has major effects on the potential decline in life expectancy. According to Olshansky et al. (2005), the rise in obesity can potentially be the cause in the diminishing of life expectancy of current and future generations (p. 1139). I believe, regardless of the health risk factors that could potentially be the downfall of life expectancy, the improvements in healthcare, technology, education, and activity, can outweigh the negatives and improve life expectancy for current and future generations.

According to Resnick (2006) health promotion focuses on assisting individuals to achieve maximum health status and is closely linked to successful aging (as cited in Saxon & Etten, 2010, p. 302). Not only do we focus on health promotion in older adults, but also we target our youth in efforts to decrease the potentials. Rowe and Kahn (1998) defined successful aging as the ability to maintain low risk for disease, high level of physical and mental functions, and engaging actively in life (as cited in Saxon & Etten, 2010, p. 302).
