Effects of Knowledge A nine year old girl’s body is destroying itself by not producing healthy blood cells. She is on the brink of death and doesn’t have much time left. Her body is creating excess white blood cells and limited healthy cell causing sever bruising, fever and high risk of infection. What can be done to save her? One of the newest and most effective way to prolong the life a leukemia patient is too extract adult stem cells from bone marrow to generate new blood cells coded to her DNA (Katz and Walker 1). Everything about the human body that has been discovered has helped doctors and medical researches create ways to fix problems that were unable to be solved before. For example, when penicillin was first discovered it changed the world forever. With this antibiotic at human’s side, doctors were able to fight infections and prolong many lives. But, with all great strides in medications there are possibilities for concern. The bacteria that was being killed by penicillin is now able to come back and be stronger than penicillin. This has created medicine resistant infections that take much more time to cure. This discovery has found to be beneficial and harmful to society. Within the book, the monster is injured and elects to just mope around the woods and not do anything strenuous. He had the knowledge that if he moved to rapidly or did any type of exercise he could faint (Shelley 130). Research has become one of the single most important aspects of changing the world today. There are multiple jobs and lessons being taught within university’s that have a successful research program. A successful research team at Wisconsin has created stems cells that are “nearly indistinguishable from human embryonic stem cells” (Katz and Walker 2). They did this without using any human eggs or embryos which is remarkable. They were able to create specific chains of stem cells that can be used later in research and another group a researchers were able to create heart and brain tissue. This could become one of the most valuable finds in the past years. If heart tissue was able to be created with the specific DNA of a patient, this could prolong the lives of men and women that suffer heart attacks and cardiac arrest. The unfortunate thing is that this won’t be able to happen for years to come and will cost millions of dollars to do. The truly troubling aspect is that there is a dangerous outcome that could arise if the stem cells would cause a mutations within bodies and could cause massive amounts of cancer cells. This is why that every avenue of possible danger needs to be observed and tested before this hits the market.
