Hedonic Usage of Social Media and Academic Performance
The hedonic usage of social media arises from activities that are devoted to pleasure and desire for some form of interpersonal connection. Facebook and Twitter, for examples, provide interconnections of individuals from similar age groups whether they are students from other area colleges or international. People continue to connect through social media sites when they seek to get in touch with a person they may have previously lost contact with or to meet new people worldwide. Few other media or channels allow for this (Correa, Hinsley, & De Zuniga, 2010). For example, approximately 73% of internet using teenagers have joined social networking sites since 2009 with almost half of them visiting these social media sites on a daily basis (citation). Currently, the most used social networking site Facebook is being utilized by hundreds of millions of individuals to connect with their relatives and friends worldwide. The use of a social networking sites such as Facebook has grown rapidly and grabbed the attention of college students in particular (the sites original demographic) as they have become so engrossed to the detriment of their academic work. The research mainly revolves around Gratification Theory which explains why and how individuals utilize a particular media that they would find useful in meeting their needs. The research will examine why students utilize social media and how they use it in the learning process and also the consequences involved. Through this research, the benefits and challenges involved in using social media in the learning process will be discussed. This is an area of high critical interest to the society. The research questions are based on the element of variable relationships. Here, the questions are typically established regarding how individuals or groups of individuals use social media and how such use is connected to academic performance. This topic will be viewed through the lens of gratification theory discussed
