For this assignment, I decided to choose the two writing genres: essay writing and instant messaging (such as Facebook and MSN when that was still around). I chose these two types of writing as they are what I have spent almost all my time writing. However, they are so different that they are close to being opposites of one another. There are many reasons for these distinct differences, one being the interest in the act of actually writing the piece, another is the atmosphere the piece is written in and hence how the writer feels when producing their work. However, there are some similarities as well.
The differences in essay writing and online chatting are very self-evident, in fact, you’ve most likely thought of a lot of differences between them. However these differences have affected how I see writing.

I learned these things from writing essays. I learned how to structure essays, how to convey my intention of speech further and how to expand my vocabulary. While I learned how to write formally by writing essays, I learned more about writing itself from instant messaging. I would account this to how I was more engaged in typing to my friends that writing an essay.
With their differences, they still have similarities. One similarity would be how both pieces of writing is attempt to write something that people want to read. Writing an essay is a pretty straightforward way to do this. To clarify this for the instant messaging I have prepared this example: If one were to read something choppy and confusing, it would be slightly distasteful and a lot harder on the reader. Hence you would rather chat to someone who clearly expresses his word and makes what he says
