With today’s increase in technological growth there is a greater need for a sustainable and environmentally friendly source of energy. Hydraulic fracturing, or as it is commonly called fracking, is defined as:
A method used to extract natural gas and oil from deep rock formations known as shale. Hydraulic fracturing is part of a process known as unconventional natural gas development, which refers to all operations associated with fracked wells, from well construction to the transport of gas and oil off the site (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.) In order to do this, fluid from a wellbore is pumped under high pressure against a rock formation until it cracks. The high pressure in the wellbore flows into the crack and forces the crack to lengthen. The expanding crack is then filled by injecting a fluid mixture that contains a proppant or small, solid particles such as sand. “When the injection is stopped and the pressure is reduced, the formation attempts to settle back into its original configuration, but the proppant keeps the fractures open. This allows hydrocarbons to flow from the rock to the wellbore and then to the surface” (Perrin, Jack, and Troy Cook, Hydraulic Fractured Wells provide Two-Thirds of U.S Natural Gas Production 1).
