Reflective Essay On The Homeless

I am walking down the street and you see a person in ragged clothes, you can tell they are homeless and come up and ask you for money. You tell them no and continue walking down the street. This is something that happens to a lot of people in our society and is something we don’t really think about overall. When people think of a population like the homeless, they might look at them in a negative way and wonder way they just can’t get a job, not know the conditions that surround their situation of what they are homeless. Homeless means an individual without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets. The first one was I got to attend and volunteer at the Gathering Place in Green Bay Wisconsin, this is a resource for the homeless population that has some kind of a disorder. This is also a place for people that just need a place to hang out at overall. I had the opportunity volunteer and play games with some of the individuals that were at this facility. I got to talk with one gentleman that was at the gathering place about his life and where he was originally from. While I was talking with this individual, we were playing a board game and having small talk. Another thing I did at this facility called the gathering place was assisted some of the individuals there with working the computers that were available for them to use and show them how to use them. The reason why this activity was chosen was to get the individual comfortable enough in a setting to just talk and have a good time. This gentleman also mentioned to me that he likes going to this faculty a lot because it provides with a positive atmosphere of relaxing and participating in multiple activities that happen every day at this place. The knowledge I gained from this experience was just to listen to their people experiences and be around a minority that I haven before in my life. The further understanding I gained from this experience was just how homeless people are just like us but have had difficult things happen in their lives. After this experience, my attitudes and beliefs did change about this populations, in the past, I had a judgmental view of the homeless population overall. Being around this population really opened my eyes to just how they are human beings and my life is not valued more than there’s. This faculty I could see is a great resource for the homeless population that has mental disorders, they had man events going on
