The problems associated with the use of fossil fuels as the worlds primary source of energy will have to be addressed sometime during my life time. Fossil fuels are not only very limited, the impact that this energy source is having on the environment will force the entire world to change our way of life. The primary byproduct of the use of oil is CO2, this release of CO2 into the atmosphere is causing what we know as global warming. As the levels of CO2 in our atmosphere increases heat that would normally be allowed to escape the earth will be trapped, therefore the average temperature of the earth will increase. This temperature increase may seem insignificant and whether the general public believes it or not it is the most pressing issue

This may be the hardest part of the transition, because people tend to be more focused on their individual lives and unaware of how connected the earth is. This will have to begin with an accepted understanding that we share the earth and the only way we can prevent the likely disasters that global warming will causes is to come together and cooperate with other peoples as one. This will have to begin with education, we have to produce several generations that understand the importance of the consequences associated with global warming and how they are related to the use of fossil fuels. As well as creating a society that is informed on political issues and actively participates in government by voting or volunteering. The United States government runs under a system know as federalism, this is where the “checks and balances” comes from. The purpose of this is to prevent one branch of government from having to much power, for example the Executive branch can veto bills from the Legislative branch, although the Legislative branch can override the veto. This process has a purpose but has lead to more problems than it has fixed literally. Federalism prevents the formation of a single national policy, instead there has to be fifty-one policies often leading to confusion. As well the movement of bills through the system of checks and balances takes a very long time, on average it takes 263.57 days for a bill to become law. This process takes even longer because of political parties that would rather do nothing instead of compromising. Another issue with this system is that it is difficult to assign accountability for failed policies because of the overlap of state and national governments. The most pressing issue with federalism could be the lack of interest of its citizen. The majority of Americans are blind to their state and local government, with voter turnout of less than 25% in these elections. These issues can be fixed by simplifying the government it’s self by eliminating political parties and lobbyist could be an example.
