The Effects of Gay Adoption on a Child

Children need loving homes and it is unfair that people are preventing them from receiving that. Homosexuals have barely been accepted and now they are being denied the opportunity to be parents. As stated by Bonnie Miller Rubin, “roughly 3,700 children are in state custody – taken from their homes because of abuse or neglect” (Rubin 2). People are fine with putting kids in homes that are unsafe but are against putting them in a home with two loving mothers or fathers. Homosexuals make up a large part of people who are looking to adopt because they cannot have kids of their own. Chelsea Rinehart stated,” I would say that the great difference between gay parents and straight parents is that gay parents

Children are safe after being adopted by same-sex parents. Although there are still laws in different states that prohibit same-sex parents from adopting a child. “Michigan already places formidable legal obstacles in the path of gays seeking to adopt. The state’s ban on same-sex marriages effectively precludes gay couples from cross-adopting each other’s children, although gay or lesbian singles may qualify as adoptive or foster parents.” (Dickerson 1). Michigan’s ban on gay adoption has one upside at least they can adopt as a single parent. But having one parent is not as beneficial as having two parents even if they are of the same sex. Michigan is making it exceptionally hard for kids to be adopted and with the amount of children that need to be placed it is not wise to ban the group of people who need to adopt the most. There are not many straight parents looking to adopt because a majority of them can have kids on their own. However, there are other states that try to keep gay and lesbian couples from adopting. “The Mississippi Adoption Ban writes inequality into Mississippi law by requiring that married gay and lesbian couples and parents be treated differently than all other married couples in Mississippi, unequivocally barring them from adoption without regard for their circumstances.” (Lewin 2). Sexuality has nothing to do with adopting a child so homosexual parents should not have as many obstacles as they do. Same-sex parents are being judged on their sexual orientation and because people are uncomfortable with them being different they are denying a child the opportunity to live a better life. “Florida and New Hampshire have laws forbidding adoption by homosexuals; Arkansas, Missouri, North Dakota and Virginia have legal precedence’s which found that gays and lesbians are automatically unfit as parents. California, Minnesota, New York and New Jersey have laws or regulations which permit homosexual adoption.”

A man who is single has the right to adopt and the same goes for a single woman. If a married heterosexual couple wanted to adopt, they are more than welcomed to, as long as they are competent of caring for a child. A heterosexual couple is capable of being able to pretty much travel anywhere in the United States to find an adoption agency willing to help them. Sadly, that’s not the case for a couple who are of the same-sex. Due to religious beliefs of certain adopting agencies, a state law not allowing placement with LGBT parents, or a policy of placing children with married couples only, one-third of agencies in the United States can reject a gay or lesbian applicant.…

Many people tend to not care about politics or anything of that nature. However E.J. Graff presents a very valid point. She states “No biggie, some people think: Just write a will and some health care proxies, appoint a guardian, and you're all set (4). However it is not that easy as may think. E.J. Graff thoroughly evaluated her claim and made a lot of valid points on the continuous revolving issue of the homosexuals and adoption rights.…

Adoption implies an opportunity to be desired, adored, and appreciated despite the flaws you have, removing the misery of living alone and placing the blissful feelings of being surrounded by a family. Annually, thousands of children enter the foster care system and wait with anticipation for their chance of having a family again. According to UNICEF, the number of orphans globally in 2008 was approximated to be 132 million orphans. Hence for decreasing this enormous number, adoption should be encouraged and supported so orphans could find a better future and accumulate a better life. In other words, we should support different types of adoption like transracial, special needs children, and international adoption.…

Adoption is known to promote cognitive and emotional development in children from foster care, but policy debates remain regarding whether children adopted by gay and lesbian parents can achieve these positive outcomes. This study compared the cognitive development and behavior problems at 2, 12, and 24 months post-placement of 82 high-risk children adopted from foster care in heterosexual and gay or lesbian households. On average, children in both household types showed significant gains in cognitive development and maintained similar levels of behavior problems over time, despite gay and lesbian parents raising children with higher levels of biological and environmental risks prior to adoptive placement. Results demonstrated that high-risk children show similar patterns of development over time in heterosexual and gay and lesbian adoptive households.…

Some people say no matter what the child will be better off with straight parents rather than gay parents. However “Williams Institute confirms there is no difference in the behavioral outcomes of adopted children raised in same-sex households when compared to those raised by heterosexual couples” (Perry). Whether gay or straight it does not affect the children’s behavior or emotions. Even though the couple is gay the children will still be better off with them apposed to being in foster-care. The foster care system is unstable because children get passed around like a toy when it comes to foster homes.…

The only states that accept same-sex couples to jointly adopt children are Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, D.C., Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. Various religions across the country consider marriage only between a male and female therefore, the option to adopt a child is also considered a sin for same-sex couples. In the Constitution, the first amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” Religion is not a factor that the judicial system can target to hold same-sex couples from adopting children. Courts systems express their concern of molestation in the household of a child raised by parents of the same sex, fearing that the child will be raped or touched by a parent.…

However it failed to increase the number of children wining new homes through adoption, and its main effect was to allow homosexual couples to adopt for the first time. ”(Doughty 2) The reason why the numbers of children decrease of adoption is because the religion agencies of Roman Catholic close down due to the fact is against church teachings to have parents from the same sex. In the article says that children wait for adoption up to 3 years in the care system living in a foster home or orphanage. But further than this homosexuals have a good reason that if they were legal then the number of children who got adopted every year would go up. (3) Since homosexuals obviously can’t have their own kids they have to have a backup plan, and the easiest way for them would be to adopt. Even though many places won’t let you adopt unless you have a mother and a father, if gays were legal, they would likely be forced to change this rule also which would start up a whole new argument. But anyways if homosexuals were allowed to adopt the children who are without homes that would help get the kids a home, no matter how solid that home is. This is important to get all kids home even though the kids will still have parents of the same sex.…

Considering the facts that support there are no differences between children with same-sex parents and children with opposite-sex parents, the controversy behind gay adoption should not exist. Considering that the evidence is so overwhelming that The American Psychological Association passed a resolution stating that it, “opposes any discrimination based on sexual orientation in matters of adoption, (including child custody and visitation, foster care, and reproductive health services) and supports the protection of parent-child relationships through the legalization of joint adoptions and second parent adoptions of children of same-sex couples” (Burkholder). An estimated 100,000 kids linger in foster care centers around the United States. Same-sex couples are dominating a large portion of the population that hope to adopt, but still continue to face many obstacles on their quest to do so. Because the Supreme Court voted to make gay marriage legal nationwide in 2015, this aids in same-sex couples being allowed to adopt from foster care agencies instead of through private, gay-friendly adoption agencies. However, homosexual couples continue to face difficulties in adopting in states that have laws to limit joint adoption to a husband and wife (Beitsch). Research shows evidence that gay and lesbian couples are more likely to adopt foster care children that typically belong to groups that are least likely to get adopted.…
