The Effects of Gay Adoption on a Child
Children need loving homes and it is unfair that people are preventing them from receiving that. Homosexuals have barely been accepted and now they are being denied the opportunity to be parents. As stated by Bonnie Miller Rubin, “roughly 3,700 children are in state custody – taken from their homes because of abuse or neglect” (Rubin 2). People are fine with putting kids in homes that are unsafe but are against putting them in a home with two loving mothers or fathers. Homosexuals make up a large part of people who are looking to adopt because they cannot have kids of their own. Children are safe after being adopted by same-sex parents. Although there are still laws in different states that prohibit same-sex parents from adopting a child. “Michigan already places formidable legal obstacles in the path of gays seeking to adopt. The state’s ban on same-sex marriages effectively precludes gay couples from cross-adopting each other’s children, although gay or lesbian singles may qualify as adoptive or foster parents.” (Dickerson 1). Michigan’s ban on gay adoption has one upside at least they can adopt as a single parent. But having one parent is not as beneficial as having two parents even if they are of the same sex. Michigan is making it exceptionally hard for kids to be adopted and with the amount of children that need to be placed it is not wise to ban the group of people who need to adopt the most. There are not many straight parents looking to adopt because a majority of them can have kids on their own. However, there are other states that try to keep gay and lesbian couples from adopting. “The Mississippi Adoption Ban writes inequality into Mississippi law by requiring that married gay and lesbian couples and parents be treated differently than all other married couples in Mississippi, unequivocally barring them from adoption without regard for their circumstances.” (Lewin 2). Sexuality has nothing to do with adopting a child so homosexual parents should not have as many obstacles as they do. Same-sex parents are being judged on their sexual orientation and because people are uncomfortable with them being different they are denying a child the opportunity to live a better life. “Florida and New Hampshire have laws forbidding adoption by homosexuals; Arkansas, Missouri, North Dakota and Virginia have legal precedence’s which found that gays and lesbians are automatically unfit as parents. California, Minnesota, New York and New Jersey have laws or regulations which permit homosexual adoption.”
