Domestic abuse is invasive and detrimental to anyone who is unfortunate to be a victim. Emotional abuse is a component of the domestic abuse cycle that can erode the victims sense of self-worth. This is a very personal issue for me as I was the victim of emotional abuse. Women of abuse often find themselves repeating the same cycle of abuse, often becoming involved in other abusive relationships. This paper is a discussion on the types of abuse that can be inflicted upon women by their spouses or significant others, and the damage which can be extremely far reaching. There are many forms or classifications of spousal abuse. According to the article, the abuse can be from constant criticism, being ridiculed, a spouse endeavoring to jealously control, snubbing your spouse on purpose, applying the threat of abandonment, menace of bodily harm and having personal property destroyed. These forms of abuse are usually used in concurrence with each other and can make the abused person feel secluded and isolated.
A serious impact of the psychological harm of an abused woman can be minimalized with forgiveness therapy. Forgiveness therapy essentially teaches the abused to forgive their abuser; however it does not preclude the abuser from accepting accountability for their actions. Forgiveness therapy helps the abused to salvage their own personal values and the qualities that make them who they are. This therapy does not mean that you are making justifications for your abuser, but allowing the abused to release any antipathy towards the abuse;, which in turn frees the way abused from the bitterness that may still
