This paper is going to provide some information and issues associated with the use of electronic cigarettes in the United States. Electronic cigarettes can also be called as e-cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery system. The reasons why electronic cigarettes have become a public health issue is because they might change people’s views of smoking again, attract young people to smoke and even people who quit smoke, and intervene cessation attempts (“E-Cigarettes should be regulated…”, n.d.). The prevalence of Electronic cigarettes is increasing among the adults in U.S.. An article was published in Oxford Journal about the trends, which showed the conclusion drew by using mixed-mode surveys to acquire exemplary, cross-sectional samples.

The first thing that makes electronic be a threat to the well being of the community or the social fabric of society is that they have many flavors. Flavors may not only be harmful, but also make kids one of the target markets. Also, flavors might be a factor to attract many other uses instead of being a replacement of smokers. One thing that makes user think the flavors are safe to inhale is because companies and manufactures suggested the flavors have FEMA GRAS™ status. However, this statement is wrong. Having FEMA GRAS™ status only means the food is safe to eat, not necessarily mean it is safe to inhale (E-Cigarettes and lung health). Therefore, the well being of community is under threat if people are attracted by the flavors of electronic cigarettes. The social fabric of society may be influenced if more and more young kids are appealed by electronic cigarettes because of the flavors. In addition, the incidence associated with electronic cigarettes is increasing rapidly, which is another reason why it is relevant to public health. As data release by Centers for Disease Control showed, there is a significantly increase of calls associated with e-cigarette exposure poisonings to the nation’s poison centers. The rate of using electronic cigarettes is lowest among people who have graduate degree, which is only 0.5 percent. Income is another way to show disparities. For people whose incomes are lower than $20,000, the rate of smoking electronic cigarettes is 2.5 percent, which is the highest among income group. The lowest rate of smoking electronic cigarettes belongs to the group with annual earning more than $100,000. Another way of identifying disparities is though sexual orientation.
