Many different people believe younger kids, such as elementary school, aren 't safe outside in the early morning because of how dark it is. For example, “It is often suggested that high school and elementary schools hours be flipped. . . Such proposals usually meet with huge public outcry about the dangers of having first graders standing outside waiting for buses at 6 a.m” (SSL, n.d., para. 11). In almost all cases where the times could change, different problems can pop up. As an investigator wrote, “. . .many school districts use the same buses to serve multiple schools. If the start times of some schools are delayed. . .the change would force other schools to start earlier in order to allow for all necessary busing to occur” …show more content…
All it takes is a few districts to change and most will follow. For example “Edina, MN school district in 1996 was first in U.S. to shift to a later start, based on medical research about sleep phase shift in teens” (Wahlstrom, 2014). After the change a study was conducted finding that, “Students in Edina reported statistically significant less depression compared with two similar districts” (Wahlstrom, 2014). Edina isnt the only district to have made the change in Minnesota. During the past 15 years a few other schools changed times such as Minneapolis Public Schools, Saint Paul, and Woodbury (SSL, n.d.). All of these ideas have been supported by an outstanding amount of data, coming from all around the country. Websites have been created to help educate people who are curious on the topic. Acording to debate.org about 60 precent of people beleive schools should start later (Debate.org, n.d.). A simple internet poll does not always give an accurate portrayal of a entire population, but it can still show a good correlation between a few and a group as a whole. Hopefully a domino effect will be started, and being to cause even more schools to change across the

It has been shown in studies that an extension to students sleeping schedule reduced the amount of car accidents student 16-18 were involved in. “a change in start time from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in Fayette County, Kentucky yielded a dramatic decrease in car accident rates for 16-18 year olds,” (Erde). This shows that a later wake up time has helped students 16-18 be more alert when driving. This means that if every school started at 8:30 a.m. students would have less risk going to school in the morning. Wouldn’t that alertness carry into what they do in school also.…

“Teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep per day,” says the National Sleep Foundation’s website, which describes the facts and consequences of sleep deprivation for teens. We have all heard the phrase, yet to most of us this advice seems unrealistic and impossible due to students various extracurricular activities and responsibilities which cause late bedtimes to be a common occurrence for teenagers. Recent research shows that as an adolescent, our biological sleep patterns make it difficult for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 PM. This proves that getting to bed earlier is not a simple solution. Going through the day feeling tired and moody is not beneficial to students nor to schools, teachers, or staff.…

School times can sometimes be absurdly early, but because of later start times some problems stir up. Later school start times can increase grades and the well being of the kids, but the downfall of that is that schools have to pay extra for more buses because usually a district only has a few busses, which then makes the school start times staggered. Although the wellbeing of kids is far more important. The idea of staggering school time is smart but if its hurting the health of people I would pay the extra money to keep kids safe. The first reason that school should start later is because it will allow kids to be more well rested and makes it easier to focus.…

Teens need 9 ¼ hours of sleep at night on average, but they are not getting that. Most teens are getting between 6 and 7 hours of sleep at night. Less sleep means less people with depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, and bad grades. Also less people with drug use. To be precise, sleep can help teens make better decisions, so they will not do have what I said above.…

People worldwide are concerned about schools starting too early in the day and have been debating about the benefits of later school start times. Every weekday, students must face the struggle of waking up early to get ready for school without getting enough sleep the night before. Schools starting at a later time during weekdays would allow students to have extra time to sleep in the morning and be more alert and focused. This can result in less sleep-related car accidents and tardies. It can also provide opportunities for students to succeed in school because studies show that alert students are more willing to study and understand concepts than if they were tired.…

Times throughout a district are already staggered, so it would make no difference to the schedule to switch which school begins at which time. This rescheduling makes sense because younger children, who currently have later school start times, are more likely to rise earlier in the morning ("Eight Major Obstacles to Delaying School Start Times."). This reversal of different school start times will avoid any problems related to busing and transportation. High Schoolers will be able to gain their extra hours of sleep, while younger children will have very little to no change in their sleep schedules. In addition to affecting students journey to school, teachers’ commutes are also affected.…

Sleep is a pretty important thing. Everyone needs it. So why do schools just toss the idea aside that teenagers need sleep more than any adult or kid. Schools are always telling kids to get better grades and do well in school, then why do they make it harder for them. Kyla Wahlstorm, who studies the science of sleep at the University of Minnesota, states " An incredible number of students are either sleeping at their desks or they're zoned out, in a fog," she says.…
