Background Information Domestic violence affects families in many ways. Beyond the obvious physical and emotional pain inflicted on the spouses, there is also the impact of such violence on the entire family. Some studies have already addressed the emotional impact. “Domestic violence generates a range of negative and overwhelming emotions for young children” (Thornton, 2014, p. 90). Knowing that these children have already suffered at the hands of their violent family members, we need to figure out how/if that person can remain in their lives and have a positive influence. More research is necessary to determine if perpetrators of domestic violence can be stable, positive and effective parents. “At a time when further reforms of the family justice system are in motion to ensure children have contact with their fathers, it seems particularly important to remember that some fathers are also perpetrators of domestic violence” (Alderson et al, 2013, p. 182). How much involvement should the father have with his children who were also victims of his temper and games of manipulation?
