Diet sodas contain a high amount of phosphoric acid. Phosphorus is an essential for all cells in the body. This is because “it is involved in cell signaling, bone formation, and acid-base regulation”(cefic). The compound earlier stated, hydroxyapatite contains both calcium and phosphorus, which are critical for growth and development of the bone structure, as well as the maintenance throughout life. Phosphorus is a mineral acid found in many different foods naturally; however, the amount found in diet soda is unnatural. Elson M. Haas, a medical practitioner, stated that phosphorus is supposed to relate to the amount of calcium in a 1:1 ratio. In contrast, diet sodas can create an off-balance, producing ratio of 2:1, or possibly even 5:1. When the ratio between phosphorus and calcium are off balance, it can decrease the pH level of the blood. The body responds by withdrawing minerals from the bone structure, thus rebalancing the ratio.
