The primary reasons for deforestation are population expansion and financial gain. Agricultural is a major industry responsible for deforestation. The ever growing need for food is driving farmers to search for unutilized land to convert to areas to plant crops or raise cattle. Additionally, the logging industry is also a large contributor to the deforestation problem. Many commercial items are manufactured from wood such as furniture, paper, and shipping pallets. Wood is also used throughout the world as a fuel source for heat production. The mining of coal and oil require large amounts of land to obtain the raw materials as well and additional quantities of land to transport the materials from the mine location. Companies like L’Oreal and Nestle have realized that times are changing and if they want their products to continue to sell, they need to change their practices. These companies, along with a growing list of others, have pledged their products to be deforestation free. This means they are tracking how their products are sourced, so the materials they are using or the products they sell do not drive tropical deforestation” (Pritchard).
