The population of the world is expanding at a very fast pace. This expansion is driving an increased need for space. The subsequent need for additional land is directly responsible for the action known as deforestation. Deforestation is the permanent clearing of forest cover in order to repurpose the area for residential, commercial, or agricultural use. (Deforestation). The forest cover of an area refers to woody vegetation with a minimum mature height of 5 m and a minimum of 10 percent coverage of the ground surface. The primary reasons for deforestation are population expansion and financial gain. Agricultural is a major industry responsible for deforestation. The ever growing need for food is driving farmers to search for unutilized land to convert to areas to plant crops or raise cattle. Additionally, the logging industry is also a large contributor to the deforestation problem. Many commercial items are manufactured from wood such as furniture, paper, and shipping pallets. Wood is also used throughout the world as a fuel source for heat production. The mining of coal and oil require large amounts of land to obtain the raw materials as well and additional quantities of land to transport the materials from the mine location. Companies like L’Oreal and Nestle have realized that times are changing and if they want their products to continue to sell, they need to change their practices. These companies, along with a growing list of others, have pledged their products to be deforestation free. This means they are tracking how their products are sourced, so the materials they are using or the products they sell do not drive tropical deforestation” (Pritchard). This is definitely a step in the right direction and more and more companies are choosing to be a part of this
