Boreal And Coniferous Forest Essay

Boreal, Coniferous, and Deciduous Forests Boreal, deciduous, and coniferous forests each possess distinctive traits and soil characteristics. Forests soils give important contributions in nitrogen and phosphorus transformations. These transformations are dependable on the weather conditions of the forest and the type of vegetation it contains. Soil mineralogy and organic matter also play an important role in the nitrogen and phosphorus transformations on the forest floor. Boreal forests are the second largest biome and make up 33% of the world forest cover. These forests are unique due to their intense cold temperatures and long winters. Boreal forests contain spodosols and inceptisols and they are primarily inhabited by an evergreen vegetation containing spruce, fir, and pine. Vegetation is low due to the cold climate and has little shrubs or plants. The long and harsh winters cause the soil to be permanently frozen. Undergrowth is nonexistent and the trees and shrubs collect their nutrients from the shallow layer of soil above the permafrost. The vegetation found in the boreal forests have naturally adapted to climate and limited nutrients. These soils have less clay content and are generally high in soil acidity (H⁺ and Al³⁺). Most of the soils are strongly leached and provide poor amounts of parent material. Spodosols have low natural fertility due to leaching and mainly sand. Precipitation continuously exceeds evaporation. …show more content…
Deciduous forests can be found in the eastern half of North America and middle Europe. The temperature averages 50°F and these forests typically have four seasons every year. The appearance of these forests changes with each season by their ability to adapt to each climate by changing their leaves. In these forests you have five zones:
1. Tree stratum zone: this zone contains trees such as oaks, maples, elms, and sweet gums
2. Small tree and sapling zone: young short

The region is heavily forested with coniferous and deciduous trees, they can live on the plateaus and in river valleys as well as survive in poor conditions such as unproductive mountain soil. Furthermore, at lower elevations and river valleys, there are a multitude of trees, such as sugar maple, white pine and eastern hemlock; which form a rich mixed wood forest. The quality of agricultural life varies depending on the location, the soil by the river is much richer which has resulted in healthier trees, and there is a greater concentration of coniferous trees in cooler northern locations. Many of the valleys in the appalachian mountains have deep, and fertile soils. Moreover, the central chain of mountains, high elevations and strong maritime influences combine to produce a forest dominated by conifers.…

Since the 1500’s there have been changes in the Prairie landscape. These changes are due to the settlement of the prairies from European settlers around 1500. As the population increased, so did the demand for infrastructure and resources. Many forests were removed to make room for settlement and lumber used to build infrastructure. Grasslands were converted into croplands which resulted in changing climates in the prairie regions (Bell, T. J & Jacobs, J. D., 1998).…

Considering my observation for my Kousa dogwood tree and the gray squirrels; the abiotic factors for the Kousa dogwood tree and the squirrels are essential. Evidently, the abiotic factors for the dogwood tree supposed to have good sunlight, the continuation of great water supply, a healthy nutrient from the fertile soil of the earth that prevent viral diseases, and the right temperature, which is very vital. Interestingly, the temperature has a lot to do or involves with transpiration, which is the passageway for the gases to go through the fine or narrow tubes since there is a difference in pressure or temperature (Spirko, J., 2015, n.d.). My issue with my Kausa dogwood tree gave me clarity from the information about the abiotic factor.…

Bearberry or its scientific term Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is a plant that grows close to the ground and is usually found in more dry ground areas like sand or soil. The bearberry has silky hairs to help keep it warm, it also has leathery leaves from living in the tundra. Bearberry is very usefull because you can use every part of it for something for example the fruit can either be eaten or used in various cooking recipes. Caribou moss or Cladonia rangiferina is another type of moss that grows around the northern regions of the world. Caribou moss or reindeer lichen as some call it can survive for large amounts of time without water, when there is no water at all the plant dries out goes dormant but after a while they will eventually start…

Some of the biomes I have found is deciduous forest, coniferous forest, grasslands, savanna, tundra, and alpine biomes. Each one has their own average temperatures, typical animals and plants. Towards the northern part of the state there are more harsh temperatures and weather compared to the lower part. The southern part though gets pretty harsh temperatures and weather itself.…

“As a general rule, the variety of life is most impoverished at the poles and the richest at low latitudes” (Kolber 152) and this is referred to as the latitudinal diversity gradient. Inorder to prove this phenomenon, more than 30 theories have been advanced. One theory holds that more species live in the tropics because they can produce more generation at lower latitudes and with more generation will come more mutations and a more likely chance of emergence of new species. Kolbert goes around the forest with Silman discovering new species of trees, some of whose leaves are as big as a dinner plate. “The trees were not just trees; they were more like botanical gardens, covered with ferns and orchids...strung with lianas” (Kolbert 155).…

Members of this large, yet dwindling industry are faced with the challenge of feeding a rapidly growing population that is expected to reach 8.5 billion people by the year 2030. The major component fueling the agricultural industry is the soil. The very outer layer of the earth’s crust is the very one thing keeping the population thriving.…

In Allan Johnson’s book The Forest and the Trees, he notions that in order to understand the concept of social life, we have to not only look at the individual, but also at the environment the individual is placed and how they interact and create social systems. Johnson explains that “a forest is simply a collection of individual trees, but it is more than that. It is also a collection of trees that exist in a particular relation to one another, and you cannot tell what that relation is by looking at the individual trees.” (Johnson 2014) By using the imagery of the forest and trees, he shows how social systems and people influence each other.…

Trees naturally sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and thus decrease global warming and its repercussions. Carbon dioxide is an essential component of the Calvin Cycle for the production of glucose, which is the primary energy source for plants as well as many herbivorous and carnivorous consumers. With the rapid increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from anthropogenic activity since the Industrial Revolution, scientist suspect that carbon dioxide fertilization will amplify photosynthesis and, therefore, sequester more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to the terrestrial carbon sink in the form of trees (Bonan 2008).2 Forests are a major terrestrial carbon sink and contain approximately 45% of terrestrial…
