Corporal punishment has become a topic of debate in recent years, and can be a polarizing subject to converse about. Corporal punishment or what others refer to as spanking, is the physical chastisement used when a child is disobedient or practices bad behavior. Corporal punishment has been banned at schools in 31 states; 19 states still support it. Additionally, many parents continue to argue that physical correction is a necessity for children. On the other hand, there are many who refuse to use spankings as a way of discipline, because of the negative effects it can have on the child and their violation of human rights. There is an outbreak of bullying that is being seen in schools today. These children are being taught that it is ok to physically hit or demean their peers. One mini study done of 273 children from diverse backgrounds showed that children who were spanked, presented a higher level of aggression than those who had not been spanked. Additionally, those who had been subject to more violent discipline were the most aggressive overall (Cambridge Core, 1994). Bullying has been a major issue for the past several years. One individual recalls: the message I got from them when they hit me was not “what you’re doing is bad, don’t do it again”. The message I got was “we don’t love you” (Russell 1996:69). A strong emotional and physical attachment to at least one primary caregiver is very beneficial for the child as stated in the attachment theory. If that child does not receive that attachment, or feel that they are loved, it can have a detrimental outcome with a diminished quality of relationship with the parent. A survey of 679 college freshmen was conducted and the results are as follows: Most respondents (90.7 percent) remembered not controlled discipline, but angry, uncontrolled actions; 67.3 percent now feel no resentment (Graziano, Namaste).
